The South Korean giant has stated that it has successfully developed a technology which will enable it to effectively double the capacity of lithium batteries. This technology basically involves the development of a silicon cathode material for the purpose of coating high crystal graphene on a silicon surface.

This is said to double the energy density when compared to current lithium batteries. Moreover Samsung has been working very hard in order to improve the battery technologies which will not only help the company in its consumer electronics business but also give it an edge in the electric car market.

Currently the United States leads the development of such high capacity battery materials where silicon is actively under study as a way of increasing capacity by more than 10 times instead of the graphite. Graphite is currently used as cathode material.

However there is a problem with this, the battery life is always shortening after repeated discharging and charging. Well thanks to Samsung this problem is now taken care of as Samsung Electronics has developed a very durable high density cathode material by coating grapheme on surface of the silicon. This then creates a protective layer around it which then allows for the capacity to be doubled without shortening the battery life.
