The South Korean giant has been working to release a virtual reality product of its own and even then it hasn’t stopped Samsung from investing in FOVE which is a startup behind an eye-tracking handset.
The FOVE headset has been successful in surpassing its $250,000 goal on Kickstarter with more than a week still left to run. Moreover now this new startup company has the backing of one of the world’s largest technology giants Samsung Ventures which is Samsung’s investment arm.
Yuka Kojima the co-founder and CEO of FOVE stated that with this new investment and from their Kickstarter community they will work extensively in making FOVE development possible on a large scale. He also said that the company’s goal was to further develop the virtual reality market.
The main idea behind FOVE basically is that it integrates eye tracking into its headset with the goal of making virtual reality more realistic for the user of the headset. On the other hand the other VR devices rely simply on the direction that the wear is facing unlike FOVE users who simply have to look at a different part of the scene for the headset to know what the wearer is paying attention to. Now as the device knows where the user is looking in a scene it can put more processing power toward that area of the display.
Now this is what has interested Samsung. Samsung has displayed its interest in virtual reality in the past as well and has even showed interest in creating virtual reality experiences with its mobile devices. Up till now it isn’t sure that how much money has Samsung offered to the company. It has been stated by FOVE that they will receive extra funding in order to enhance the completion of the hardware production.
