Samsung Electronics Co. is now planning to release two new versions of its top-tier Galaxy smartphone in the coming month. One of these versions includes a model with a display covering three sides, according to Bloomberg.
Both these new versions will have an all-metal body and will also use Samsung’s most advanced processor chips. The second model will be introduced to the world at the Mobile World Congress in Spain and will only be having a front facing display some of the sources revealed. Moreover both these new versions will have 5.1 inch screens.
Recently Samsung has been hurt by Apple’s new iPhones which have ceded the global market share after the larger screen devices captured sales in a segment that has been pioneered by the Galaxy S lineup. But now the Asia’s largest tech company has started to use its skills in displays and chips in order to recapture its innovation edge and revive earnings that have been going down for the past three quarters.
Lee Sang Hun, who is a Seoul-based analyst at HI Investment & Securities Co., stated that Samsung now needs a new model with new technology and features in order to halt the iPhone’s increasing sales and also to distinguish itself from others. He also stated that even though Samsung has been developing cheaper models globally to defend its market share, the next Galaxy S series smartphone is the most important phone as that is where the company earns money.
So that is why Samsung has finally decided to introduce such a new feature in its smartphone. The company introduced its first device with a multiple sided screen last year with the Galaxy Note Edge which is a 5.6 inch phablet with a display that stretches down the right side so that the users can read messages and news from any angle. So now Samsung will bring out a Galaxy smartphone that will have a screen which will cover the front and both the left and right sides.
These new Galaxy smartphones are being developed under the ‘Project Zero’ codename and will also be using metal frames. These metal frames will be provided to Samsung by BYD Electronic International Co., according to the sources. Basically this is a subsidiary of BYD Co., which is a Chinese automaker partially owned by Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway Inc.
Today Samsung’s shares fell by 1.7 percent. However the stock has risen by 2.1 percent this year. Samsung also hinted at a wraparound screen in invitations this month to a March 1 unpacking event in Barcelona, which is the same event where last year Samsung unveiled its Galaxy S5 smartphone to the world.
This event will be held ahead of the Mobile World Congress. With falling sales of its Galaxy S5 and rise in competition, especially from Apple, Samsung is trying hard to get back its market share and increase its revenues. Now let’s see whether technological changes bring any good news for Samsung.
