Galaxy-S6-Edge-Shutting-DownA trademark filing has revealed that Samsung is applying for the name Always On Display. This supposed display is being used in the galaxy s7 and galaxy s7 edge. The Always On Display will be used to show the information such as notifications, match scores, health data etc. even when the phone is asleep.

This is particularly an interesting concept because even though the display is “Always On”, it consumers less than one percent of the battery to showcase that information. that is because Samsung uses AMOLED displays in its phones and AMOLED displays tend to illuminate individual pixel unlike the LCD panel which has an entire display backlit. So the power required to show the information is much lower.

only the pixels that are used to display information are fired up while the rest of them are in a state of sleep.gs7-always-on

We have already seen such as display in the Galaxy S6 Edge. The edge panel displayed various kinds of information on its edge strip. But this is an old concept that was available in moto x and Google’s ambient display. Samsung’s filing for a trademark shows us that it has done something interesting with the display and will showcase those abilities in the upcoming Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge.
