Samsung is the leader in the mobile OLED display industry with its cutting edge displays that are currently the best in the world. Samsung dominates with 95% of the market share and is believed to have invested $9 billion in a brand new facility that will supply Apple with 100 million OLED displays a month for the upcoming iPhone. While this is the case in the mobile scenario, the large screen market is dominated by LG. it currently sells most of the OLED TVs worldwide while Samsung concentrates it resources on LED LCD TVs.
But all that is going to change soon. Samsung is making a substantial push into the OLED TV market and has reportedly invested 3 trillion Korean Won in a manufacturing facility in Tangjeong, South Chungcheong Province. This facility is set to become operational in Q3, 2016. Samsung is testing the final version of the 8th generation OLED manufacturing techniques.
LG is also making plans to push into the mobile OLED space. This comes close on the heels of the contract with Apple to supply iPhone screens. LG is also pursuing other manufacturers for their contracts and is investing 1.5 trillion won in a dedicated mobile display manufacturing unit. This facility will also act as a research and development unit to improve OLED display technology.
The OLED panel market will grow as a $25 billion industry this year and the Korean rivals want a big share of the pie as major smartphone players are moving towards OLED technology in their smartphones.
On the whole, LG wants to push into the mobile OLED market where Samsung reigns supremacy and Samsung want to be a big player in the OLED TV industry that is currently dominated by LG.
