A poll conducted by a technological website that involved various people from different walks of life have voted for the Galaxy S7 edge as the best Android smartphone ever. The poll also included other phones such as the HTC 10, LG G5 and Sony Xperia X performance but it was the edge variant of the S7 that won by a considerable margin.

And why not. The S7 edge is personally one of my favourite phones this year and though the edge screen is not of much use to me, it does make the phone look very attractive and slim. Looks that cannot be matched by the iPhone 6S and the HTC 10. (these 2 phones are also my personal favourite in the looks department.)

But the looks alone can’t make a phone top class. The software and the ecosystem are equally important. Samsung has worked hard for years and as a result of that, we have a phone that looks stunning but protects the data by using military grade encrypting software, Samsung Knox. It has a top quality camera and a display to drool over. Samsung Pay and Gear VR only help the handset against the others.

But some of the underlying design changes are also critical for the device’s success. The flat back in last year’s phone made it a nightmare to use. Samsung listened to the consumers and curved the back this year so that the handset feels natural in the hand. The addition of water and dust resistance made the phone worthy but the inclusion of expandable storage is what won my heart and my wallet.

All I want from the next year’s phone is a foldable screen and the ability to remove the battery. Modularity would help too.
