Samsung is at it again. The Korean conglomerate plans to flood the market with as many variants of the flagship as possible. There is the edge variant as well as edge plus. The rugged version that is generally suffixed with active like the S6 active. And then there is the mini version of the flagship, the Galaxy S7 mini.
Samsung has typically made the mini version of the flagship as mid-ranged superphone but that will change with the Galaxy S7 mini. Apple has scheduled the iPhone SE event on march 21st and will aim the phone at developing countries such as India to fuel its sales growth.
Now Samsung is one company that won’t let Apple hog the limelight. Similar to the compact version of the Xperia Z line from Sony, Samsung aims to pack the Galaxy S7 mini with all the high-end components that made the Galaxy S7 and the S7 edge so great.
Reports indicate that the phone will have a 4.6-inch 720p display that is sharp enough for the screen size. 3 GB of RAM. the processor will be the same snapdragon 820 or the Exynos 8890 that powers the bigger brothers. The camera will be a 12 MP one with advance features such as “periscope lenses with 3x optical zoom.” The price of the device is said to be significantly lower than the flagship models so that budget-conscious buyer can get one.
Samsung worked on the S6 mini but dropped the plans to produce the phone due to the potential cannibalization of the sales of the Galaxy S6. But that does not seem to be the case now. Samsung is also making the phone a bit thicker at 9.9mm and will provide the microSD card slot.
It is not yet known whether the phone will have an IP68 rating that is an indicator of water resistant and dust proof. Samsung is mum on this handset as of now. But expect to hear more about the device once the iPhone SE is shown to the world.
