We all know that Samsung is pushing the virtual reality wagon really hard. That is evident from the promotional offer of a free Gear VR if you pre-order the Galaxy S7 or the S7 edge. The Korean giant has now introduced us to what it calls as Entrim 4D. so what is this Entrim 4D?
Entrim 4D is a headset that is specifically designed for the virtual reality world. This headset provides a sense of movement in the body. To achieve this, the headset tricks the nervous system with “specific electric messages to a nerve in the ear.”
Samsung has developed this technology and named it as “Galvanic Vestibular Stimulation.” That’s ok, I didn’t get it the first time either. Samsung has also showed a video where the Entrim headset creates as sense of realism and transports the user into the virtual world like never before. Not only the visuals, but the sound is now real too.
“Virtual reality shouldn’t be experienced only with the eyes,” says Samsung’s Steve Jung, the project’s creative lead. “With Entrim 4D, we hope that people can experience VR the way it was meant to be—with their whole bodies. Electrical signals—like the ones used to help restore balance in stroke patients—are delivered via headphones equipped with electrodes that correspond to movement data input by engineers. Users thus feel as if they are a part of the on-screen action, and can also sense direction and speed of movement. And, when paired with the team’s Drone FPV, which utilizes data from the drone’s motion sensors, they can even feel like they are flying.”
Many VR users experience nausea and headaches while using the VR equipment. Samsung aims to eliminate these side effects by matching the sensation of the body movement with the experiences that are being played on the headset.
Samsung has brought this headset to its SXSW booth and is offering demos. But is silent on the pricing or the availability. One of the representatives has mentioned that the product is still in the development phase and will take quite a bit of time before it hits the shelves.
