Samsung has done it yet again. It is offering solutions that will help the disabled perform things that they generally struggle to do in real world conditions. The next device from Samsung, that will be a part of its Olympic campaign, is a blind cap. As strange as it sounds, this cap will help the blind swim better in the Paralympic competition that will be held soon.

Samsung is the official partner for this year’s Rio Olympics and has been unveiling a slew of prototype devices that will help lots of people in ways that were simply unimaginable before. This blind cap is developed with an aim to safeguard the blind while they swim and help them perform better. The way in which a blind swim is a bit different. When he dives into the water and is about to reach the end of the pool, a steward taps them on the head or the shoulder indicating that he is nearing the wall and has to flip immediately. More often than not, the blind swimmer bumps into the wall and gets injured severely.

Samsung’s blind cap alerts the sightless swimmer by gently vibrating the cap on the head and signals to perform the flip to complete the lap. This device has been developed in collaboration with the Spanish Paralympic Committee and Cheil Spain.

These alerts are of course controlled by the coach who constantly watches over the swimmer and presses the button on the Gear S2 or the S7 (or as a matter of fact on any Android smartphone) to produce the vibrations.

Not only that, the cap collects various health parameter data of the swimmer and gives a rating on his performance so that the coaches and the staff can help him swim better in the future.

“It’s much more than a wearable, it serves as a standard of innovation and we are convinced that it will soon be a reality in the Paralympic Games,” said a representative. “Samsung wants to bring technology to elite athletes, allowing them to go a step further by improving the conditions of the sport in which they dedicate their lives to.”
