Samsung is the third high-profile tech giant to take an interest in self-driving cars concept after Apple and Google. it has reportedly formed a secret team that will design chips that form the brains for a self-driving car. This isn’t a momentary fluke from Samsung, the Korean giant in the past has worked with BMW and Mercedes and provided storage and other electronic components for their high tech cars.

This specific task force will be headed by one of the three CEO’s of Samsung, Kwon Oh-hyun. The team includes innovators from semiconductor and sensor division, System LSI and other automotive divisions and will function as a subsidiary of the semiconductor division.

Samsung has already made a big push in the internet of things platform and is connecting every device it can lay its hands on to the internet but self-driving cars are something of the future and need a mammoth amount of testing and resources.

Apart from this self-driving car chips, Samsung has announced that Its Advance Institute of Technology is working on 3D mapping that is used by the cars to detect the adjacent and on-coming vehicles, artificial intelligent to drive the car and also the technologies that allow the car to learn from its environment and get better as the time goes on.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Samsung announces that it is building an electric car that can also self-drive. Why not, Samsung has all the technology and resources it needs to build such a futuristic car.

But that will not be easy. Tesla already has cutting edge electric vehicles on the road that can also partially self-drive. Google is also testing prototype car and it won’t be long before they have the final version. Whatever may be the scenario, it a race to the future and everyone wants to be there first.
