It’s not oculus rift or the HTC vive that is bringing the virtual reality world to the masses but Samsung. With the help of its $99 Gear VR that is powered by its flagships, Samsung has eventually succeeded in getting the tech enthusiasts interested in the VR world. But since the system is powered by a smartphone, it lacks the muscles of a full blooded VR system like the PlayStation VR. That is set to change soon as Samsung has announced that it is working on a native VR headset like the oculus rift but without the hassles of the dangling wires around the neck.
If Samsung succeeds, then we might soon see futuristic VR headsets that are popular in the star trek series.
“You enter a holodeck, you’re actually in a virtual world, interacting with all the virtual objects as if you’re living there,” Rhee said during a keynote presentation at Samsung’s developer conference here in San Francisco. “That’s the kind of reality we’re trying to create on these virtual-reality headsets.”
The Korean giant wants the system to be powerful so that it stays relevant for a few years before an upgraded model is unveiled. It also has plans to incorporate position tracking system and hand gesture recognition to control the user interface and other elements.
Samsung has been working with Facebook-owned Oculus for the Gear VR headset but is unsure of its future endeavours with the company. The galaxy maker might have figured out a way to design and construct these devices on its own and these headsets might compete with the other players all the while being lightweight and wire free.
Samsung has also announced a slew of cool tech products at its annual developer conference. Stay tuned to check out other updates
