Samsung SDI, the battery making arm of Samsung has unveiled a battery prototype that can make an average car travel a distance of 373 miles (600km) before plugging in to recharge. This is fantastic news for the electric car lovers and for people who are looking to buy an eco-friendly family car but are obstructed by the short driving range.

As the oil wells dry up, the next generation of cars have to be smart enough to run on other energy source than the tradition oil. Samsung SDI wants to power such electric cars which will be a common sight in the coming future.

“We aim to lead the era of popularizing EVs by introducing a variety of solutions and products desired by customers and the market at this auto show.

Particularly, we will accelerate to make [a] foray into the global automobile market including North America by providing the new high energy density battery cell based on the world’s top technology leadership as well as the low height packs and LVS solutions.” Samsung SDI said in a statement.

Today’s drivers are subjected to a common phenomenon called as range anxiety where a heightened fear of the car running out of electricity constantly bogs the mind.

Tesla motors already has few cars such as the Model S and Model X that have high distance range.

Samsung is showing uncommon interest in the automotive industry and that’s a good thing. Tradition automobile manufactures and tech giants combining forces could smooth the way for the dream car that can travel thousands of mile and has absolutely no negative impact on the environment that is deteriorating at a rapid rate.

The main hurdle would be to set up the charging stations. People don’t buy electric cars because they fear stopping in middle of a highway without any sight of a charging station. Manufacturers do not install this charging station as the user are too sparse. This deadlock has to be eliminated to increase the electric vehicles adoption rate.

Samsung SDI has mentioned that this battery will be commercially available in 2020.
