Samsung is preparing a slew of its home grown exynos processor to be used in its own devices as well as to power the third party devices. The latest reports indicate that the exynos 8870, the slimdown version of the 8890 is being used in one of the devices that Lenovo will launch soon.

The exynos 8870 and 8890 are the system on chip (soc) that are equivalent to the snapdragon 810 and 820 respectively and are powerful enough to be built into the flagships and premium mobiles. Samsung is also preparing the exynos 7650 and 7880 that will be comparable to the snapdragon 625. These are to be used in the mid ranged mobiles in the coming future.

Lenovo along with the meizu have been using the exynos soc instead of the snapdragon or mediatek soc in their smartphones in the past and if the trend is to be followed, we may see the exynos 8870 in more than one device that are manufactured by brands other than Samsung.

The exynos 8870 is an octa-core soc that has 8 cores. 4 ARMv8 cores do the heavy lifting and 4 low powered Cortex-A53 cores take care of the basic tasks such as calling and maintaining the phone in a stand-by mode.

With declining fortunes in the smartphone sales, Samsung is looking elsewhere to stay profitable in the technological arena. It was recently reported that Samsung will be the display supplier for the apple’s iPhone 8. It already supplies semiconducting components to various manufacturers such as RAM and SSD.

If the exynos brand goes mainstream, QUALCOMM could have a tough competition. It is already showing signs of decline with the overheating issues with the snapdragon 810 and exynos gaining popularity could prove disastrous.
