Hours after QUALCOMM showed us the snapdragon 820, Samsung is unwrapping the competition. The exynos 8890. Its first custom designed CPU that is different from any other exynos processor that was made by Samsung. Officially, the processor has been christened as Exynos 8 Octa 8890 but we will call it the exynos 8890 for time being.

This 64-bit processor has been manufactured on the 14nm FinFET process like the apple A9 chip in the iPhone 6s and 6s plus. Samsung built custom cores to suit its requirements specifically. The processor has 8 cores. 4 Mongoose 64-bit ARMv8 cores do the heavy lifting like running intense applications or games and 4 Cortex-A53 cores take care of the regular lightweight tasks.

Smaung has also declared that the exynos 8890 is 30% faster in performance while consuming 10% less energy compared to previous generations due to the inclusion of Samsung Coherent Interconnect (SCI) technology. This chip has an integrated CPU and modem, a first for Samsung. Theoretical download speed of 600mbps can be achieved as the modem supports the cat 12/13 LTE.

The GPU consists of the MALI T880 with 12 cores. Expect the graphic intense games and full HD movies to run with any stammering with this chip when coupled with adequate amount of RAM.

The supported resolution has also been bumped up as the exynos 8890 supports resolution of up to 4,096 x 2,160px. But it isn’t necessary that you will see a display of such as resolution on a phone powered by 8890.

You will most likely see this processor in the next super phone from Samsung, the galaxy S7 as Samsung has announced that the chip will enter the mass production stage some time at the end of this year.
