The galaxy s series phones were always top end with cutting edge features and components. But Sony last quarter launched the z5 premium with a 4k display. Samsung, which prides itself on the fact that its smartphones have all the features anyone desires, will pass on the 4k display.

Why?

Several reasons have conspired to make this decision happen.

First is that any screen that has a resolution of more than 1080 on a 5.5-inch phone is useless as the naked eye cannot differentiate the extra pixels. Second is that the smartphone chips being made today aren’t designed to drive so many pixels. A typical 5.5 inch 4k display has about 808 pixels per inch. That’s insane number. The chips although support the display, the extra pixels’ load make them super-hot making the phone unusable.

The third reason is the content. You won’t buy a 4k phone to watch the home screen and the app drawer function in 4k resolution. content is need to justify such a beautiful display and that is lacking. Even to download the 4k apps and content, your 4g LTE won’t be sufficient. An advance network such as the 5g network that plays in the field of gigabyte downloading is needed and they won’t be launching until 2018-2020 period.

Even other smartphone manufacturers aren’t interested in the 4k displays as this is a technology still in an infant stage. Samsung and LG supply displays to other tech manufacturers and they haven’t received any request to make 4k displays for the smartphones.

The 2k displays like the galaxy s6 one are perfectly suited for the smartphones in today’s world and switching to 4k displays when the content and app support is absent is utter foolishness.
