It’s all but a secret that Samsung has managed to convince Apple to let it produce the iPhone’s futuristic OLED display that will be fitted into the models scheduled for the year 2017. Apple, on its part, had no choice but to offer Samsung the deal as it couldn’t find another manufacturing partner to supply the new technology display in quantities that the iPhone require.
Samsung has already committed to invest huge resources in the production facility to ramp up the production and the first move has been recently seen when it invested KRW 8 trillion (or $6.8 billion) in the display manufacturing facility. The facility already produces 200 million AMOLED displays a year. The investment is to transit the AMOLED production facility into an OLED super house that can ramp up the output by 50%. In other words, the facility can now supply as many as 300 million OLED panels that will be required by the iPhone of the future per year.
Of these, the reports have mentioned that there will be 100 million OLED panels of 5.5-inch size meant for the iPhone plus model.
Apart from the Korean giant, LG and Japan Display Inc. or JDI are also supplying the OLED panels for the iPhone. Apple is one tech company who likes to reply on multiple partners rather than one for avoiding supply chain constraints of its cash cow product. But the lion’s share will go to Samsung as other do not have the necessary capabilities to supply so many display units.
While Apple has criticized the OLED technology in the past for displaying over-saturated colors, it has now admitted that the technology has grown enough for Apple products and now sits far above the LCD LED display used in the current iPhone models.
