Samsung unveiled for the first time the consumer version of the rollable display that it plans to mass produce very soon. It truly is a marvel, this screen that can roll up like a piece of paper opens up a huge number of opportunities for the overall smartphone industry. In fact, when completely rolled up, this display is like a small metallic cylinder that resemblance a pen and has a diameter of 35mm.i cannot imagine what kind of devices this display will make possible.

This is achieved because Samsung was able to manufacture the display with just 0.3 mm thickness and weighs about 5gms. But readers have to remember that this is just the display and adding the touch layer will add significant weight and thickness to the final display assembly unit.

Many such rollable, foldable and bending display were shown in the past but most of them were prototypes or concepts.

The said display is a 5.7-inch 1080p resolution screen with a pixel density of 386 dpi. Even though a rollable display, the colours, and contrast are on par with the top end super AMOLED display. Samsung is already preparing a smartphone called as Galaxy X that has nonregular display. We do not know if it has a rollable or a foldable display.

The problem with these types of devices is the logic board as well as the battery. The display curves and bends but these components do not. It remains a challenge for Samsung to embed these components in the final device without damaging them while unfolding the display. Another problem is the thickness and space. The battery takes up a considerable amount of space and putting a big battery in such type of devices is next to impossible without bulking up the entire device.
