Before going into the details, let me say that Samsung’s new RAM chip has a 128 GB capacity. The highest for any RAM module and it’s the most power efficient RAM chip out there. samsung has been innovating like crazy in the semi-conductor industry and it has recently unveiled the first 6 GB RAM chip for smartphones. The chip is actually smaller than the present RAM chip that are in use.

Now Samsung has introduced what it calls as a 128GB DDR4 RDIMMS. The Korean tech company is ready to mass produce this chip that finds place in the servers and high end pcs. But how did Samsung actually manage such a feat?

“The chip, designed for big enterprise servers, uses Samsung’s “through silicon via” manufacturing technique. That allows the company to connect RAM chips vertically using electrodes passing through holes rather than more conventional wiring you find in other RAM. In turn, that allows it to build up memory into larger 3D stacks, to squeeze more into the same footprint.” Gizmodo website quoted says

Samsung adjusted about 144 chips made of 36, 4 GB capacity modules to bring this RAM chip to life. This highest capacity RAM module doesn’t sacrifice on the speed. The RAM can provide a data transfer speed of a lightning 2,400 mpbs. Even though Samsung didn’t mention the cost, it would be out of reach for the common gaming rig builder.

A typical server has about 96 slots for the RAM chips. Put in the Samsung’s new chips into every slot and you have a total RAM capacity of 12.2 TB of RAM. I cannot even define the possibilities that open up with such a server. that’s insane amount of RAM.

Samsung says these new DIMMS are special because “the chip dies are ground down to a few dozen micrometres, pierced with hundreds of fine holes and vertically connected by electrodes passing through the holes, allowing for a significant boost in signal transmission.”

Technicalities aside, Samsung is doing wonders and I simply wish for this RAM chip as a Christmas present.
