Samsung is leading the way in semiconductor manufacturing with introduction of efficient and denser components that will enable the smartphone chipsets to shrink in size as well as increase in performance. The latest introduction of 12 gigabit LPDDR4 RAM is the example. The RAM modules are produced using 20nm process and will help the devices attain 50% increase in performance and taking 30% less space on the motherboard. The 12 “gigabit” will provide 1.5 “gigabyte” per unit RAM used in the devices.

Gigabits, abbreviates as GB, is not the same as Gigabytes (GB), just as bits are not bytes. A byte holds 8 bits, so 12 Gigabits would be equivalent to 1.5 Gigabytes.

The DRAM have a speed of about 42666 mbps and will hog 20% less energy. The 8 GB DRAM used previously made possible to equip a smartphone or a tablet with 4 GB RAM. With the new tech, Samsung will be able to squeeze about 6 GB RAM into the same space or put in the 4 GB RAM with 30% less space required than before.

All this indicated that Samsung might make use of this ability to have 6 GB RAM in their next high end phone, Galaxy s7. But the experts say that 6 GB RAM in a smartphone will be a serious overkill bringing unnecessary performance gain that won’t be beneficial to the consumers.

Rumours are also afloat that the galaxy s7 might pack in a 4k display, powered by QUALCOMM made snapdragon 820 which is a very powerful CPU but still a less power hogger than predecessors. All this will be made functional by a bigger battery. Looks like the galaxy s7 will be one hell of a device.
