Samsung and NBA are going to film today’s All-Star Game at Madison Square Garden, the dunk competition, the 3-point contest and even a private practice session using virtual reality cameras. This will enable all the Gear VR owners to be able to view the footage in all of its 360 degree glory via the Milk VR virtual reality app within a few weeks’ time.

The actual footage is going to be free but you will need to own a Galaxy Note 4 smartphone and the Gear VR headset. It is also being said that the new Galaxy S6 will also support the Gear VR. As the technology is new there are still a lot of things that need to be viewed.

The camera crews are still experimenting with camera locations in order to provide a realistic but immersive experience. The footage is shot with VR cameras that can record video in every direction that is then joined together afterwards to provide an immersive experience.

Jeff Marsilio the Vice President of Global Media Distribution at the NBA stated that the VR is an amazing technology and brilliant for big spectator events. He also stated that it’s great for intimate access moments such as private practice sessions. Jeff explained that now you can see somebody in a location where you could not even buy a ticket for. He said that the footage’s were shown to everybody around the NBA and they all were really happy.

The NBA VP said that the video packages will have a lot of replay value with viewers being able to watch the game footage as a whole or to witness the reactions of courtside celebrities or even the other competitors. This will give the viewers an experience they never had before.

Moreover Samsung is also trying to find new uses and partners for this new technology, the Gear VR headset. Plus this partnership with the NBA may inspire other types of entertainment to bring their fans closer to the action than would otherwise be possible.
