So it seems like people all around the world are getting the hang of smartphones and now everyone wants one. According to Gartner, there were over 1 billion sales of smartphones in 2014. Apple came out as the big winner in the last quarter as Samsung lost the no. 1 position to the American company.

When we look back at 2013, we will notice that there was an increase of 29.9% from the last quarter of 2013 which now reached 367.5 million units. Apple released its new model of the iPhone series and this time the company managed to make a bigger phone with a bigger screen. Everyone knows that Apple makes quality products and as soon as they made big phones, people started to buy Apple products. Samsung was the top dog since 2011 but now due to Tim Cook’s sensible man management, they have managed to beat Samsung.

There were 1.2 billion units sold in 2014 and when compared with the previous year, this is an increase of 28.4% in sales. A research analyst at Gartner confirmed that Samsung lost nearly 10 percent points in market share in the last quarter of 2014. The analyst continued by claiming that the Korean company is still struggling to control its falling smartphone share.

Samsung is having some really bad times as in the third quarter of 2013, it had the highest market share and now it is struggling to control its demising share. This falling trend shows us that the Samsung user is having doubts about the company and they are shifting their allegiances.

On the other hand the Chinese companies are making high end devices with low prices so people get diverted towards them as well. But for now, Apple is dominating the premium phone market with its iPhone 6 and iPhone 6+. This time around it won’t be easy for Samsung and we are still waiting and observing whether the new Samsung Galaxy S6 will be a hit among the users or not.

Here are some stats for 2014’s last quarter. Apple sold 74,832 units and its market share was 20.4%. Whereas Samsung sold 73,032 units and its market share was 19.9%. On the third spot we have Lenovo and they sold 24,300 units in the last quarter and had a market share of 6.6%. On number 4 we have Huawei.

Some analysts believe that Huawei will be a major force in the future and they will sweep all of the market. They are the major force in China which means that they are serving 1 billion people already. Huawei also made their smartwatches which they unveiled at this MWC in Barcelona. Huawei managed to sell 21,038 units and had a market share of 5.7%. And on the number 5th spot we have Xiaomi and they sold 18,582 units with a market share of 5.1%.

Now we’ll just take a look at the stats of the previous year for Apple and Samsung. In the last quarter of 2013, Apple managed to sell 50,224 units and had a market share of 17.8% whereas their competitors from Korea sold 83,317 units and had a market share of an outstanding 29.5%.

This just shows us that they were a giant just a year ago and Apple managed to injure that giant within a year. We remember the Apple advertisements when they were saying that iPhone 5 fits in your hand and that big phones make life harder and then just a year after that, they came up with those big phones and they were a hit.
