Samsung is set to win the patent crown this year with a patent grant number of 7679 so far this year. Even though there are few days still left in this year, Samsung doesn’t have any intention to stop and is filing for more number of patents this year. Not every patent application will grant a patent but the likely outcome Is that Samsung is set to dethrone IBM as the patent king. IBM held this title for 22 year and Samsung came second to IBM for 10 years now.

IBM has 7005 utility patent grants this year followed by LG and cannon. The patent data statistics released also showed the number of patents applied and won by other giant such as google, apple and Microsoft.

“Interestingly, all of these companies received far more grants in the back half of the year,” says Sqoop co-founder Bill Hankes. “This trend is true also for utility patent applications: far more were published in the last six months. It may be worth noting that December of 2014 was particularly heavy, so the actual totals for 2015 could change.”

But IBM isn’t taking the revealed data lightly. The company released a statement that they remain confident that they will top the chart like it did for the past 22 years.

“This report is not based on any data we recognize. IBM remains optimistic we will remain atop the annual U.S. utility Patent list, but that distinction is determined and announced by IFI Claims Patent Services based on U.S. Patent and Trademark Office data.”

Despite the patent filing, Samsung is in middle of a patent war with apple and has lost half a billion dollar recently.
