Just last week Qualcomm unveiled its newest chipset to the world which will basically power the main share of mobile technology in 2015 (the Snapdragon 810). Now even Samsung which is Qualcomm’s newborn silicon rival has followed its footsteps by making a first formal introduction to the chipset. The brand new Exynos 7420 chipset by Samsung will be powering its upcoming flagship smartphone the Galaxy S6 as well as the next Apple iPhone.

Previous benchmarks have proved that we are looking at an amazing chipset that closely matches Qualcomm’s cutting-edge processor’s performance and is made ahead of its time 14nm process.

Now this 7420 SoC parks an octa-core processor and a Mali-T760 graphics unit and will also have its power consumption reduced by 30 to 35 percent compared to its previous generation 20nm chipsets. This makes it a low power and high performance package.

This process by Samsung has been made on three-dimensional (3D) FinFET transistor technology in order to overcome the limitations of the typical 2D plane (Planar Structure). Moreover Intel has also been using this method for its desktop processors for a while.

Even so Samsung prides itself on being the first to bring this approach to the cramped 14nm mobile application processor die. Samsung has also made it clear that it is going to use this process in the production of its other semiconductor modules even such as its NAND memory chips. This could lead to even smaller chips which would than increase capacity in the future.

Now as far as the Exynos 7420 is concerned, Samsung plans to extend its usage into a variety of different products this year. This means that the upcoming devices apart from the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge will rely on Samsung’s latest accomplishment.
