Samsung’s Thinnest and Lightest Notebook 9 devices are on sale now

The CES 2016 saw a host of other Samsung devices such as the smart fridge and ultra-thin television that promises excellent picture quality. The event also saw the introduction of a few computational devices like the 12-inch TabPRO S and the Chromebook 3, but the real computers were the Samsung notebook 9 laptops with 13 inch and 15-inch screen option. These devices are now on sale.

First up is the notebook 9-13-inch model. It comes with a 1080p excellent 13.3-inch screen. It is curious to observe that Samsung isn’t going big on the resolution like the MacBook in its high-end laptops. But the screen is excellent in its colour reproduction and viewing angles. It is just over 13mm in thickness and weighs around 2 pounds. That’s a new for the Ultrabook category. This is due to the magnesium alloy build that gives the laptops a premium feel as well as sturdy build quality. The latest intel processors make an appearance which are power efficient increasing the battery life noticeably. The 13.3-inch laptop comes with a core i5 and the 15.6-inch variant comes with a core i7. There is 8 GB of RAM coupled with 256 GB of SSD on both the laptops. Plenty of ports make these laptops very convenient for professionals in various fields.

The 15-inch model too has a 1080p screen and similar configuration with an exception that it houses a USB Type-C port that essentially make it future proof. This one weighs less than 3 pounds and is 14.5 mm thin. The battery life is rated at 12 hours. The cost is at $999 for the smaller laptop and $1199 for the bigger one.

There are also premium versions of these laptops. The Notebook 9 Spin has a QHD+ 13.3inch touch display that rotates 360 degrees along with a more powerful processor. ($1300)

The top-end Notebook 9 Pro NP940Z5L-X01US has a 15.6-inch screen with UHD resolution and a discrete graphic card (GTX 950m). This will cost you $1500.

“Having a laptop that is easy to carry around but doesn’t sacrifice functionality or style is no longer just a luxury – it’s a necessity for many people,” said Gary Riding, senior vice president, Mobile Computing at Samsung electronics America. “The new Notebook 9s offer the features Samsung is known for – extraordinary displays, premium performance, all-day battery life and seamless connectivity with other devices – all in the ultraportable package demanded by today’s mobile consumers.”

The differentiating factor between these laptops and competitors is very narrow. Except for its weight and thickness, I would be having a hard time recommending it to my colleagues and relatives.
