Samsung aims to put all the control of your smart home appliances as well as the smartphone on your fingertips. Well, technically on your finger via a smart ring. The U.S patents and trademark office received this rather unique patent request from Samsung.
The patent revealed this smart ring will be able to control your smart home. For example, you could dim the light or set the thermostat to a particular temperature. There is an option to close or open the curtains by just rotating the ring in a clockwise direction. The patent shows a ring dubbed as smart ring. There is an accompanying device like a smartphone which acts as base station. These two work in sync to manipulate. Samsung states that this smart ring could work even with a smart tv or a tablet.
The working method will be to rotate the ring in clock wise direction and the smartphone will fire up the screen or it would be appropriate to say that the tv will fire up and shows the compatible options. You could select the option that you like. The final device could add the anticlockwise motion enabling more number of options.
Samsung also indicated that the smart ring also has the ability to turn off your tv, change the radio station by a simple gesture. The motion sensor also adds different interactive options with various gestures like lower the volume of the tv by just waving your hand in a circular motion.
Samsung has also revealed that the engineering team are working hard to integrate Facebook into this setup. It isn’t clear how they will achieve that. My guess is that the smart ring will have a method where the television will display your twitter home page by performing a specific action.
Many tech giants are working on similar prototype but we may never see this such control rings. For this to function, there has to be a home that is deeply integrated into the Samsung or any other specific eco system and that seems to be far stretched. Maybe controlling devices via a home automation standard like the ZigBee would be a simpler option.
