Xaomi is the Chinese manufacturer that is renowned for producing spectacular phones with a very affordable price tag. Now it has introduced the third generation of Redmi phone, the Redmi 3. What is striking about this phone is that it offers iPhone 6 like specs for a little more than $100. A metal unibody, monster battery and a pleasant display are something to start with.
Samsung is an android manufacturer who mainly deals in low end and mid-range phones and is a dominant player in the Indian and Chinese market. Now with the introduction of the Redmi 3, its position as smartphone leader is threatened. People will naturally migrate towards the cheap phone that has offers a premium experience.
So how does xaomi do this?
It’s simple, manufacturing phones have become cheaper over the time and xaomi was able to make the Redmi 3 phone for about $100. It doesn’t make any profits on the phone. After a few months, the manufacturing and components price is lowered even further but xaomi still sells the phone at the launch price thus making a decent profit of every handset sold.
Now this is a phone that Samsung cannot match even with its impressive portfolio of smartphones. If Samsung made a sub $150 phone that has the metal body, killer screen and other host of features such as Samsung pay, then the cannibalization of its other phones such as the galaxy s6 and note 5 would destroy its premium smartphone empire. Yet ignoring the likes of xaomi and Huawei would collapse its non-premium smartphone market share.
