Samsung has recently introduced a high performance mobile memory storage which is based on Embedded Multi Media Card (eMMC) 5.0 technology. This new gigabyte 3 bit NAND based eMMC 5.0 storage by Samsung is specifically targeted at its smartphone and tablet mass markets.
Dr. Jung-Bae Lee the Senior Vice President of Memory Product Planning and Application Engineering Team at Samsung Electronics stated that with this introduction the company plans to take the lead in the expansion of highly density mobile storage.
He also said that the company is busy in enhancing its next generation embedded mobile memory offerings with improved performance and higher densities. This he said is in order for the company to meet the increasing customer demand across the whole mobile industry.
Moreover the flagship smartphones are already transitioning to 128 GB memory storage based on Universal Flash Storage (UFS) 2.0 or eMMC 5.1 standards and the mid-market smartphones will now be able to enhance their storage capacity to 128 GB as well. The new 3 bit 128 GB eMMC 5.0 memory by Samsung will basically speed up this transition.
This new 128 GB eMMC 5.0 will deliver speeds up to 260 megabytes per second for sequential data reading. This means the speed is at the same level of performance as that of MLC NAND based eMMC 5.1 memory.
Now for the random data read and write operations this eMMC will be capable of handling up to 6000 IOPS (input/output operations per second) and 5000 IOPS respectively. This means that it is sufficient for supporting high definition video processing and even advanced multitasking features.
With this new 3 bit eMMC 5.0 line-up the South Korean company has expanded its 3 bit NAND business from SSDs for data centers and PCs to the entire mobile memory storage market. Moreover the company has stated that it will continue to work on broadening its application of 3 bit NAND Flash memory.
