Samsung this year moved away from Qualcomm in favor of its own in house Exynos chipset for Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge. The main problem was Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 had overheat issues. Though this move helped Samsung, but it also came with some shortcomings. Samsung Exynos processor family use ARM reference design, for which Samsung is paying royalties.
Unlike Samsung, Qualcomm, Apple, MediaTek and NVidia use their own custom designs. But it looks like things are changing at Samsung and the company is working on a custom reference design for its next line of Exynos processors. This will remove the dependency towards ARM.
Chipset makers usually release new technology to developers nine to 12 months away from the start of a new production cycle, which would fall in line with the M1 series being used on the Galaxy S7 next spring. Reports say the new Exynos M1 is 45 percent faster than the Exynos 7420 used in the Galaxy S6.
It is also rumored that Samsung is working on its own GPU, which could be combined with Exynox M1. With these new efforts it looks like Samsung is all set to start the Mobile processors war with Qualcomm and Apple.
