Galaxy Note 4 is Using Sony IMX240 Camera not ISOCELL sensor

Samsung Galaxy Note 4 has a great camera and is one of the best for photography. In fact earlier, I posted a story how Galaxy Note 4 was voted as the best smartphone for taking photos.

Latest tear down showed that the camera used in Samsung is a Sony IMX240 sensor. I was a bit surprised first as Samsung was doing a lot of marketing about ISOCELL sensor technology. In fact Samsung Galaxy S5 has the ISOCELL camera. Before Galaxy S5, Samsung was using Sony cameras in all their top end phones. So why Samsung came back to Sony now? Is ISOCELL technology not matured enough or is it not good for optical image stabilization.

The IMX240 is a 1/2.6” sensor, nearly 15% larger than the average 1/3″ sensor used in top-shelf smartphones. This works out to the pixel size of the rather small 1.1 microns.

Though when we take photos we do not think about all these details, but it is good to know that Samsung is using a good camera technology for Galaxy Note 4. Apart from Samsung Galaxy Note 4, Sony cameras are used in Apple iPhone, LG G3 and of course in Sony’s own flagship Xperia Z3.
