Samsung prides on the fact that their flagship phones such as the S7 and S7 Edge are water resistant. In fact, the IP68 rating is one of the most advertised features. The Korean tech giant also advertised this feature for the Galaxy S7 active variant and described it as one of the most rugged phone in the world. Well, guess what? The S7 active isn’t as waterproof as it looks.
A non-profit organization called as consumer reports that is also known for the iPhone 4 antenna-gate is back again and they claim that the S7 active failed its water tests.
according to Samsung, the phones that are rated as water resistant protect their internals up to 30 minutes when placed under 5 feet of water. Consumer reports have mentioned that when it placed the S7 active under similar circumstances, the phone malfunctioned. It had distorted and damaged screen.
To make sure this isn’t a one-off case, it tested a second device and the results were same. The water seeped into the front facing camera rendering it unusable and the screen flickered while the touch was unrecognizable.
This has caused an uproar in the mobile world. A device that claimed to be water resistant has been damaged by water when it was operated within the rated condition by the manufacturing company.
Samsung, on the other hand, is in the denial mode. It has issued a statement that the tested devices might be defective and that it ensures all the products advertised as water resistant go through quality assurance tests.
“The Samsung Galaxy S7 Active device is one of the most rugged phones to date and is highly resistant to scratches and IP68 certified. There may be an off-chance that a defective device is not as watertight as it should be.” Said Samsung
