The Curious Case of the Samsung Heir
The South Korean giant Samsung has been making the news regularly for the past few months. Though the business is dizzying in the global markets, the investors have something else to worry about too. The command and the responsibilities of this sprawling giant will be passed on to the son of the ailing patriarch, whose amazing business capabilities have been curious stories. He was given a top position in the company just two years ago.
Lee-Kun Hee, 72, is hospitalized due a heart attack. But the patriarch, when asked if the responsibility and position shift in the company intensified his ailment, hasn’t yet announced his son to be an official heir to the giant. But, coming down to the financial world and the who’s who of Samsung, no one is in doubt that young Lee is the third generation to join the company.
Lee Jae-Young joined the company in 1991. In 2012, he was promoted to be the Vice Chairman of the company. His apparent sway comes from the fact that Samsung’s rapid success in smartphones is undergoing a stunning reversal as compared to their rival, Apple. To add to this, Samsung did not have a great start to the year, with the sales reducing significantly and Galaxy S5 getting a lukewarm response.
There is no history of his leadership although he has been meeting the owners and CEOs of Facebook and Apple. However, even if he is the unproclaimed heir, we expect some responsible handling of the giant from the next generation of the Lee’s.
