Many believe that Samsung’s 840 EVO has been lacking a lot of excitement. The 840 EVO was released in 2013. Back then it was thought to have an excellent, strong-performing and low-cost drive.

But now many people believe that the 840 EVO has seen a drop in performance. Regression started to occur in deployed driver that saw the device’s read performance of old data drop significantly.

Some believe that at the heart of the problem was the Samsung’s 19nm TLC NAND. Because it had a small feature size and tighter requirements of TLC, it caused the drive to slow down and it also had to re-read the cells so that it could properly read the charge-decayed cells.

So now Samsung wants to make things right. So Samsung has released a performance restoration tool and a software update.

So this new update would bring the 840 EVO to better handle decayed cells and reduce the need to re-read. The restoration tool would refresh drive’s data.
