Recent reports on Chinese website Leikeji say that new iPhone 7 exploded after a 50cm fall. The screen has cracked, violently separating it from the chassis. First there was the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 which resulted in the largest fire and burn hazard related product recall. But now the story continues with the iPhone.

This is most likely because of the Lithium based batteries that smartphones use. They are extremely volatile, and exposure to either moisture or heat can trigger them to explode or leak violently. That is exactly what happens when you puncture such battery.

However, unlike the Note 7 random explosions, this iPhone incident was a follow up from a drop of only 50 centimeters. The owner reported that after picking it up from where it was dropped, the aluminum body of the phone shocked him, started emitting smoke and then caught fire.

The funny thing is that the user apparently got the Apple phone after reading about the exploding Galaxy Note 7 smartphones.

This is not a first time where an iPhone 7 explodes. In August, a motorcyclist fell of his bike and his iPhone exploded in his pocket fusing the model to his leg. In September, an another one exploded while in the box and in October the same model caught fire in the back seat of a closed car, burning the entire vehicle.
