At the Samsung Developer Conference today, the Korean company announced a new camera called “Project Beyond”. This camera can capture 3D footage for use with Gear VR.
This is a unique camera as it mounts 16 individual high-definition video cameras. These cameras can capture a gigapixel or 25 gigabits of data every second and can stream that footage back to someone wearing Samsung’s Gear VR headset, essentially transporting them into that world.
Samsung said these cameras can create a 3D virtual reality environment wherever they are placed. Also, if anyone using a Gear VR can stream to these cameras live or can record the footage for later use.
Samsung is still working on these cameras as the quality of the video need to be improved a lot. Samsung did not give any price or availability information at this moment. But this is a big step forward for Samsung in the direction of getting better footage for Virtual Reality devices.
