Samsung is doing it yet again. It is increasing the screen resolution on its upcoming flagship. Not the Note 7 but the Galaxy S8 will come with a gorgeous 4K UHD display that will enhance the VR experience. Even when the experts are mentioning that the current 2k displays are an overkill for a smartphone and the naked eye cannot differentiate individual pixel, Samsung is embedding the phone with a 4K display similar to the Sony Xperia Z5 premium.
The main reason for this move is that the phone when placed couple of inches away from the eye, will need higher resolution display to make the content looks natural in virtual reality mode.
“Samsung Display showcased a 5.5 ultra-high definition 4K display with a pixel density of 806 ppi for virtual reality devices at the Society for Information Display, a display trade show, in California in March,” said a representative of UBI Research.
“Considering various factors including the production yield rate for the next-generation display expected to improve in the coming months, the 5.5-inch AMOLED will be deployed in the next Galaxy smartphone, presumably, named the S8.”
Reports point out that Samsung is on board for the Google’s daydream VR project and will make loads of compatible phones. chief among them is the Galaxy S8.
This is a major departure from the 5.1-inch screen size that has been carrying on for three generations of the S-series phones. but I guess Samsung could release the S8 mini with 5-inch 2k display in place of the regular phone and the S8 will feature a 5.5-inch screen with UHD resolution.
This puts a question mark on the S8 edge. Will it have a 5.5-inch screen or a 5.8 dual edge screen? Maybe it could even have a foldable display that Samsung has been teasing for a long time
